Chassis SFACXXBJ2CGL00110 - "S"

Murray H. de Weerdt

What does "S" Mean = "Best Road RS200's ever"
The genius behind this great idea was Mr Murray ! from Canada
In fact, Murray realise that the original car was underepower and that the S version was in reality how the car should be ! We agree
The deal involved the sale of 20 vehicles to Canada.
A deposit was paid and the chassis numbers were selected from the FORD stock.
These vehicles then had upgrades done to them, electric windows, some with air-con, ears and rally colours with blue stripes + the 350 HP upgrade engine of course. The target was to make them "best Road RS200's ever" and Murray succeed as the S Version is the Best Road RS200
FORD agree to badge them as RS200S.
FORD at that time would not permit this without a heck of a lot of paperwork filling and decision making at a very high level, rules regarding the use of names and letters on cars were very stringent,
Bob Howe suggested that once in the hands of the Canadian purchaser they would be able to add the letter S as they so required.
May be all EVO S cars had the heavy duty rear differential and power steering.
There were at least 2 A/C cars both road. The others all had air - recirculation and an improved (better fittment) air flow into and out of the stock fan.
These cars had an excellent windshield heater that was not switchable and fully functional in the summer (radiator outflow). small repairs to how the air system flowed improved the heat levels in the cockpit immensely - much cooler.
All EVO S cars were supposed to have black sparco's 1cm wider, all road cars to have red sparcos and Recarro's most cars were delivered with only one set of seats. All supposed to come with a set of Sabelt Belts in addition to the 3 point belt. Some of them like chassis 167 was used as rally cars.
Of the 20 cars selected, 16 were "normal" road cars and 4 were evolutions.
RS200 Evolution 'S' cars:- 096, 101, 153, & 168.
RS200 'S' Road cars and Rally cars 102, 109, 110, 111, 120, 121, 125, 129, 137, 138, 144, 152, 164, 167, 173, 175.

The Canadian deal fell through but at least 2 have been sold in Canada, the others cars was sold around the world, and I ve been myself in UK testing a S version in 1990 and bought 2 cars for me and my partner.
Of course, we buy them because they had 350 HP !

This what I have been told and I have had this information verified from Bob Howe ....

Following the end of "Group B" and in the period that followed FORD were left with the difficult sale of the remaining warehouse full of RS200's (remember some were broken for spares immediately after homologation). One deal involved the sale of 20 vehicles to Canada, this was to one person pulling together the deal in Canada (MDW owner of 110). A deposit was paid and the chassis numbers were selected from the FORD stock. These vehicles then had upgrades done to them, electric windows, some with air-con, they were also given special attention from Tickfords who had the job of making these built cars ready for sale with trim etc, this was basically to make them the "best RS200's ever" in the words of the very person who was trying to get this deal together.

The person arranging the deal would have liked FORD to badge them as RS200S. Bob says that FORD at that time (and the same now) would not permit this without a heck of a lot of paperwork filling and decision making at a very high level, rules regarding the use of names and letters on cars were very stringent, in fact Bob told me of a time he nearly lost his job as he went ahead and had LOTUS and CORTINA added one above each other to the boot of the final production of these cars back in the 70's, some people higher up the chain of command were not happy at all about this and all cars had their boots removed, the holes filled and the badges moved to opposite ends of the boot ! - Bob really thought he was looking for another job by the time he was finished with by the management, all he had done was make what he thought was the best decision !

Bob suggested that once in the hands of the Canadian purchaser they would be able to add the letter S as they so required. That person says the extra 20 x letters "S" were cut in Canada from the same material as the original decals. It was cut from a scan of the front of a sale brochure. The 20 new decals were then sent to Bob back in the UK. I have seen some cars with this S on the boot so it would seem some got that extra letter but Bob doesn't remember himself or his team adding the letter so it could be people arranged it themselves or were given the letter S in a pack to apply themselves. Sadly whilst this is an interesting point now, back in '86 (some 20 years ago) it was not such an issue and it can be difficult now to work out exactly how things happened but we are doing our best.

I am told that all EVO S cars had the heavy duty rear differential and power steering, the road cars did not. There were at least 2 A/C cars both road. The others all had air - recirculation and an improved (better fittment) air flow into and out of the stock fan. The housing and duct work often were mismatched resulting in little or no airflow out of the standard air ducts in the dash or anywhere else. what air came out was often hot air (heater fully off) that was spillage into the air intake from the radiator outflow (intended to go over the hood and windshield). These cars had an excellent windshield heater that was not switchable and fully functional in the summer (radiator outflow) small repairs to how the air system flowed improved the heat levels in the cockpit immensely - much cooler.

All EVO S cars were supposed to have black sparco's 1cm (1 inch?) wider, all road cars to have red sparcos (most to be 1cm? wider) AND Recarro's most cars were delivered with only one set of seats. All supposed to come with a set of Sabelt Belts in addition to the 3 point belt. the owners could chose which they preferred and fit the Sabelt if so they wished.

Of the 20 cars selected, 16 were "normal" road cars and 4 were evolutions.

RS200 Evolution 'S' cars:- 096, 101, 153, & 168.

RS200 'S' Road cars:- 102, 109, 110, 111, 120, 121, 125, 129, 137, 138, 144, 152, 164, 167, 173, 175.

Sadly the full 20 vehicle Canadian deal fell through although at least 2 made it there - There, so now you know
